he National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) is the leading advocate for high school sports and activities. They write the rules of the games, advocate for student-athletes’ health and safety, and offer educational support for coaches and athletic departments.
As of the 2026-27 season, the NFHS currently has four approved diagrams for high school flag football field dimensions (300 x 120 feet, 360 x 120 feet, 360 by 160 feet, and newly approved 300 x 160 feet). Each state association then decides which of those field sizes to use for its own high school programs, and states can adopt any or all of the approved versions. That is why the size can differ from one state to the next: NFHS provides the options, but the state makes the call.
Why Now?
Momentum is growing. In April 2026, Kansas became the 18th state to sanction girls flag football in high schools. As of July 2026, most states have either sanctioned flag football or are running pilot programs. Here’s the breakdown, according to the NFHS website:

are running independent or pilot programs
4 STATES
are voting to sanction the sport in 2026 and 2027
5 STATES
are showing interest in adding it to their student-athlete offerings
