Like many fields in the desert Southwest, the natural grass football field at Cholla High School was problematic. Maintenance costs were rising, water shortages continued to plague the area, and the field itself was littered with potholes and lumps, making it unsafe for play. It was in desperate need of an upgrade. MMTH completely reimagined the facility, installing a custom GAME ON® synthetic turf field with an innovative infill blend that keeps the field cooler longer.

Community Support, Cooling Effect

The before and after story of the football field at Cholla High School is more than a tale of transformation. It’s proof that the power of community can change an entire generation. A couple years ago, the Chargers’ football field consisted of dying grass and dirt, and the mindset was that turf was way too hot and unsafe. With the help of a local football coach and the community’s support, Tucson United School District passed a bond that changed everything. With a bond oversight requiring NFL quality turf fields, TUSD hired MMTH to bring this vision to life.

First, we installed an irrigation system consisting of multiple Hunter water cannons designed to cover massive turfed areas. Shock-absorbing padding was laid in preparation for the natural (not rubber) infill. A combination of Geofill and CoreMax® infill products from Shaw® Sports Turf deliver incredible evaporative cooling properties, creating a surface that runs 40 degrees cooler than traditional synthetic turf fields for up to 18 hours.

Pride And Glory, Rise In Fame

The final layer of the Chargers’ new field is the GAME ON synthetic turf from Shaw. GAME ON’s innovation allows designs, such as numbers, lines, and logos, to be tufted directly into the turf in a single run, significantly reducing the number of cuts and seams, which helps increase player safety and extend the life of the turf. This technology is how MMTH was able to customize Cholla’s field with lyrics from the Chargers’ fight song—PRIDE AND GLORY and RISE IN FAME are emblazoned on both sidelines, a constant reminder of the rallying cry that bonds the Cholla community.

I feel like I’m walking on an NFL-level field.

After the new field was complete, MMTH Studio got to work creating athlete hype videos of the football team. The new field plus the hype videos create a prideful and powerful football program that continues to bring the energy before kickoff and long after the final whistle.
