MMTH converted Salpointe Catholic High School's natural grass baseball field in Tucson, Arizona into the state’s first and only multi-use baseball field: a single synthetic turf surface engineered for baseball while its outfield doubles as flexible practice space for girls' flag football, football, and soccer. Built using the Shaw Sports Turf B1K GAME ON multi-use turf system with a Geofill cooling top infill, the project turned a single-purpose diamond into a year-round, multi-sport field built to stand up to the Arizona desert heat.

A Program Out of Room

Salpointe Catholic keeps one of the busiest athletic calendars in the area, indoors and out, with nearly 30 school sports and more than 50 teams spread across all seasons. That depth is a point of pride, but outdoors it created a real bottleneck: only four field surfaces (baseball, softball, football, and soccer) to serve every field sport the school offers, from varsity, JV, and freshman football to boys and girls soccer, baseball, softball, girls’ flag football, and boys and girls lacrosse. In the fall, the overlap was constant, with several programs chasing the same practice windows at once. With no open land left to build on, the school couldn’t simply add a fifth field.

The opportunity to create more room was hiding in the baseball field. In its original form, the field was a challenge: a natural grass surface that served a single sport, had to be watered continuously to survive the desert heat, and could only take so many hours of play before wear and recovery pulled the field out of rotation. Rebuilt using synthetic multi-use turf, it became a solution. The diamond now takes far more playing time with no recovery downtime, and the water it uses is applied by choice to cool the surface for play, not continuously to keep it green. One field now does the work of several.

Built For Baseball, Ready for Everything

Salpointe engaged MMTH directly based on the strength of MMTH’s earlier synthetic turf work across the Tucson area. MMTH delivered the project as a design-build and self-performed the work, spanning design, field graphics, and turf installation, so a single team owned the outcome from concept through opening day. MMTH Sports Design handled the field layout and value engineering, the construction and turf teams built the surface, and MMTH Creative Studio captured the finished facility through photography and drone work.

At the center of the project is the Shaw Sports Turf B1K GAME ON^® multi-use system. Shaw B1K is a professional-grade synthetic surface engineered specifically for baseball and softball, built for true ball response and confident footwork and proven at the highest levels of the sport. GAME ON technology tufts logos, designs, and field markings directly into the turf in a single run rather than inlaying or cutting those pieces in, eliminating excess seams and cuts that come with inlaid graphics and lines. This produces a safer, more durable, lower-maintenance surface that can be installed in a shorter timeframe compared to traditional turf.

The Arizona climate shaped the build as much as the sports did. The system uses a sand and rubber infill finished with a Geofill cooling top dress. Geofill is an organic infill made largely of coconut fibers that holds surface temperature well below a standard rubber infill, by as much as roughly 50 degrees. To push cooling further, MMTH installed an irrigation system beneath the field with quick-connect hookup points positioned around the surface, letting crews pull hoses from multiple locations and water the field down to bring the temperature down, a meaningful safety and playability advantage where surface heat is a real concern.

MMTH also designed the field to the budget rather than around it. By tightening up oversized, unused space in center field, adding fencing, and raising the outfield wall so the field still played long and gave hitters a clean batter’s eye to track the pitch, the team delivered the flexibility the school wanted without paying for space it did not need. The project broke ground the last week of May 2026 and was completed by the end of August 2026, delivered on time for the start of fall sports.

More Than a Diamond in the Desert

The payoff reaches across Salpointe’s entire athletic program. A field that once served baseball alone now flexes through the seasons, giving girls’ flag football, soccer, football, and other programs a place to practice without waiting in line for one of the school’s three other fields. Athletes get a consistent, professional-grade surface that plays the same in March as it does in August and allows for far more use than grass ever could, and with proper upkeep it will serve the school for years. What began as a single-sport grass field is now one of the most flexible pieces of Salpointe’s athletic program.
